A Florida woman was awarded $11.3 million in a lawsuit against a woman who posted defamatory messages on the Internet. The defendant, a Louisiana woman, posted comments labeling the plaintiff as a “crook” and a “fraud”
Lyrissa Lidsky, a University of Florida law professor, claims that defamatory internet statement lawsuits might become a trend. Interestingly, the plaintiff knew the defendant had no hope of paying the damages, as she had recently been forced to leave her home because of Hurricane Katrina. The defendant could not afford a lawyer and did not even show up for trial.
The plaintiff claimed she wanted to make a point to others who unfairly criticize others on the internet. The dispute between the women arose after a disagreement about sending the defendant’s sons to boarding school.
