Living Wills Not Representative of Preferences

May 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Disturbing new research reveals living wills might not accurately reflect the desires of people whose lives are in jeopardy.  Feelings often changed in study participants as they got older and became ill, with some desiring life sustaining measures and some not wanting preservation treatment after all.

The most interesting part of the study was that many people could not accurately recall their initial choice.  Participants were interviewed at the beginning of the research and twelve months later.  33% of study members changed their minds about treatment and 75% could not correctly recall their initial choice.  Even more troublesome was the memory recall of patients’ caregivers, with a full 86% misremembering the choices of the patient.
