Religious Harassment in the Work Place

July 21st, 2008 · No Comments

In a post 9-11 world, the occurrence of religious harassment in the work place has increased recently.  This is an uncommon event as compared to incidences of sexual harassment but it still happens.

An employer hired an employee who was of the Muslim faith.  The employer accommodated these beliefs by providing a private praying space for the individual, allowing him to keep a beard, and wear a turban.  The company did a fantastic job of being compassionate about his faith, but forgot to prevent forms of harassment from other employees.

On repeated accounts, other employees accuse him of being a terrorist and called him names.  They would also hide his time card whenever he went off to pray.  The man complained to his immediate supervisor and eventually to the human resources department, but no disciplinary action was implemented.

The man eventually took the employer to court and won.  The company made a good effort to try and accommodate for his faith, however they forgot the most important element: the human one.
